The Whatcom Community College men’s soccer team is made up of student athletes from around the world. Sophomore defender, Yuta Nakamura is one of those, bringing an international perspective and strong work ethic to the Orcas.

Originally from Fukuoka, Japan, Yuta is proud to call one of Japan’s most vibrant cities his home. Fukuoka is located on the southern island of Kyushu. It is the country’s fifth largest city and is known for its incredible food, beautiful scenery, and rich history.

“If you ever visit, I highly recommend trying Hakata ramen with its rich and creamy tonkotsu pork broth,” Yuta said. “The food experience doesn’t stop there. At night, the city comes alive with yatai, traditional open-air food stalls where you can enjoy local dishes and experience a different side of Japan.”

During his freshman season with the Orcas, Yuta appeared in 14 matches, earning 3 starts as a defender. He made the most of his opportunities by scoring 1 goal and recording 5 shots throughout the season. While the stats tell part of the story, Yuta views his first year as an important step in his development as a player and is motivated to build on that heading into his sophomore season.

Off the field, Yuta has spent much of his free time this summer watching the FIFA World Cup, enjoying all the exciting games of this year’s tournament. In the classroom, he is majoring in Business and plans to transfer to a four-year university after his time at Whatcom. His long-term goal is to study Management Information Systems and Sports Management, with hopes of owning a business in the sports industry one day.

As he prepares for this upcoming season, Yuta is focused on continuing to improve and earning a larger role on the field.

“I am really looking forward to improving my skills by training with high level teammates next season,” he said. “All of my teammates are more experienced and skilled players than I am, so I did not get many opportunities to play in games. Even so, I could feel myself improving through training. This season, I want to continue developing as a player so I can earn more playing time and become someone who contributes to the team’s success.”

With another year of experience under his belt and a desire to keep improving every day, Yuta is ready to make an even bigger impact for the Orcas this season. His commitment to growth, both on the field and in the classroom, it what makes him such a valuable piece of the Whatcom Community College family.
